A language family is a historical relationship between modern languages. Languages with common ancestry are grouped in linguistics as language families. This includes Romance languages, such as French and Spanish, which have Latin as a common ancestor, or Germanic languages such as Dutch, English, and German, which are descended from Proto-Germanic. Knowing the classifications of languages helps to explain how they relate to each other.
