Enter PhoneBloks.com, a movement to showcase customer support for modular smartphones and tablets; devices comprised of smaller, self-contained, replaceable hardware components that can be mixed and matched to create devices customized to meet the needs of individual customers.
While the benefits of customizing devices with modular parts are obvious from the manufacturing angle (something Henry Ford envisioned and put-into-practice long ago) the not-so-obvious benefit of this approach is that perhaps, if it works, we might just end up polluting the Earth less than we do today. Consumer electronics make up a disproportionate amount of the garbage that ends up in dumps around the globe.
