If you produce content for a global audience, you should consider becoming a member of the Localization Industry Standards Association (LISA). Founded in 1990, LISA describes itself as the “premier organization for the Globalization, Internationalization, Localization, and Translation business community. Over 400 leading IT manufacturers and services providers, along with industry professionals representing corporations with an international business focus, have helped establish LISA’s best practice guidelines and language-technology standards for enterprise globalization. It’s the organization to join when you’re serious about international business.”

The organization’s extensive web site offers a variety of publications for members and non-members alike. One “must-read” publication is The Localization Industry Primer. According to LISA.org: The 35-page Localization Industry Primer shows how this young, dynamic industry is making globalization happen. This unique reference document offers a clear, compact overview of the forces behind economic globalization. It examines the need for, nature and benefits of, effective product globalization and its twin process, localization. It provides definitions of key concepts, introduces and explains major functions and workflows and flags key issues that those going global for the first time need to address. Last but not least, it surveys localization industry structures and identifies current best practices and future trends.
